| How much freedom do you feel an Owner should allow his Captain in terms of hiring crew? I feel that if an Owner would like to be involved in the hiring process they should feel free to meet with potential crew and coordinate with the Captain. I think ideally it should be a combined effort so that both the Captain and Owner are satisfied with the team. If the Owner was not available or did not feel the need I would have no problem assembling a first class top notch crew. |
| What do you do when you disagree with the Owner? The Owner is your boss and unless the disagreement jeopardizes safety of guests/crew, or violates the law I would abide by the Owner decisions. |
| How do you handle conflicts between crew members? As the Captain I would mediate so that the crew members involved reach an agreement. If this is not possible I would use my management training in order to explain what is right and wrong and how the problem would be dealt with so that future confrontations could be avoided. |
| How much down time do you feel a yacht needs each year, to ensure a safe and happy crew? I believe there should be 2 to 4 weeks set vacation time per year. As well it has always been my experience that after worked weekends the Captain should give a day or two. There will be exceptionally busy times where the days off will be hard to come by, but that's usually followed by a slower time periods in which the crew can catch up on a few days off. |
| How much time is the maximum time that should pass between emergency procedure drills on board? I would say approximately 1 drill per month. I think it would be wise to refresh the crew on emergency procedures at least 1 time a month. |
| What do you feel is the most important quality for a successful Captain to have? Leadership- As Captain you need to be able to command respect and lead by example. Your knowledge and confidence should gain support of your crew so that you become a great team leader and mentor. |
