General
Why did you leave your most recent position? You will see from our CV's my wife and I have recently been working on a temporary basis on a 160' & 132' for friends in our professional network while waiting for the right permanent fit. So please do not consider our recent freelance work as a lack of longevity. Our seasonal and permanent employment are all references and glad to recommend us. Since upgrading to the 1600 GT license our primary goal has been to make the right long term career commitment. We are confident if chosen we will exceed all expectations and believe based on the description / itinerary we are the right match.
What kind of hobbies do you have, or what do you like to do in your free time?  All types of watersports such as scuba diving. I enjoy going to sporting events i.e. races, football games and basketball games. Organizing activities with friends and fellow crew. Going to movies and reading a good book.
Is the yachting industry a career for you, or more of a sabbatical?  A career, which I have demonstrated through longevity, loyalty and goals for individual programs.
Describe what type of situation on board you feel you would fit in best? It's great to work with a positive crew. I consider myself a great team player and feel that if everyone works as a team the program will run more efficiently. In the end the experience will be much more rewarding for the owner, guests and crew alike.
Captain
How much freedom do you feel an Owner should allow his Captain in terms of hiring crew? I feel that if an Owner would like to be involved in the hiring process they should feel free to meet with potential crew and coordinate with the Captain. I think ideally it should be a combined effort so that both the Captain and Owner are satisfied with the team. If the Owner was not available or did not feel the need I would have no problem assembling a first class top notch crew.
What do you do when you disagree with the Owner? The Owner is your boss and unless the disagreement jeopardizes safety of guests/crew, or violates the law I would abide by the Owner decisions.
How do you handle conflicts between crew members? As the Captain I would mediate so that the crew members involved reach an agreement. If this is not possible I would use my management training in order to explain what is right and wrong and how the problem would be dealt with so that future confrontations could be avoided.
How much down time do you feel a yacht needs each year, to ensure a safe and happy crew? I believe there should be 2 to 4 weeks set vacation time per year. As well it has always been my experience that after worked weekends the Captain should give a day or two. There will be exceptionally busy times where the days off will be hard to come by, but that's usually followed by a slower time periods in which the crew can catch up on a few days off.
How much time is the maximum time that should pass between emergency procedure drills on board? I would say approximately 1 drill per month. I think it would be wise to refresh the crew on emergency procedures at least 1 time a month.
What do you feel is the most important quality for a successful Captain to have? Leadership- As Captain you need to be able to command respect and lead by example. Your knowledge and confidence should gain support of your crew so that you become a great team leader and mentor.
