General
Why did you leave your most recent position?

I am trying to work on a larger yacht as a Chief Stewardess.Ideally i would like to work on charter yachts but would consider private yachts, especially if a position will arise on a very large yacht.

What kind of hobbies do you have, or what do you like to do in your free time?

Running, cycling, playing tennis, reading

Is the yachting industry a career for you, or more of a sabbatical?

It is a career as i have been in for 9 years and want to remain so for another 5 years at least !

Describe what type of situation on board you feel you would fit in best?

A well managed boat with longevity, a captain who is aprochable and crew members who do work as a team ver well. I enjoy being busy and like taking on the Purser role during downtime periods. I enjoy being involved in shipyard work, i am good with financial management, getting quotes, provisions etc... I also enjoy training stewardesses and get them to show their best potential.

Chief Steward(ess)
How do you organize yourself to ensure that your work is being kept up with to a high standard?

For every yacht i have worked on , i always have a stewardess manual with all the directives they need to know in terms of detailing and laundry. I always try to be ahead of time, especially when i only have 24 hours turnaround !!

Every stewardess would have their own duties to carry daily while being off charter according to lists i am making. When guests are on, i make them rotate between service with me, cabins and laundry. On a large yacht i would have a service team and housekeeping team. Knowledge of owners and guests is highly important for provisioning prior to their arival or crossings. Whatever i do, i beleive that anticipation is the key and being prepared for changes is really important too

How do you manage your Stewardesses to ensure that they remain challenged and interested in their job?

I am trying to find out what they are good at and enjoy, i don't hesitate in congratulating them as a happy stewardess will produce more performance if she feel appreciated. I like to give them small projects to work on and always encourage their creativity with table decorations, napkin folding and flower arranging. I am also the first one to thank the stewardess who has been washingand ironing my personal clothing as i do respect that very much and doesn't take personal favors for granted.

How do you handle a disappointed or disgruntled Owner?

By listening to him and making sure he does know that i care about his complain and then i will reassure him that we will do our utmost to resolve the situation. As Chief Stewardess we do hear complaints which we feel we cannot solve directly and still have to deal with them accodingly (ie: A/C not working properly, Sat TV not receiving any signals, noisy generators, vibrations, foodetc, drinks not being cold enough in time, mismatched laundry etc... The key is to acknowledge the complaint whether the guest is right or wrong and deal with it

What do you feel is the most important quality for a successful Chief Stewardess to have?

Care and diligence and endurance. The Chief Stew is very much a representative of the yacht as she/he spends all the time with guests and becomes quickly a familiar face to them. We need diligence to ensure all cabins, laundry and services are being done properly. Endurance as the days are very long for us and we still need to be in shape and smiling, even when we are tired.

How do you feel the Service, Cabins, and Laundry duties should be shared between the interior crew?

As i mentioned before, if i have a team of 2 or 3 girls, i will make them rotate, service with me, cabin and laundry every 3 days. If i have 5+ stewardesses i will have a head of housekeeping and a lead service. Of charter, everyone is involved in cleaning and/or doing laundry depending on how many girls i have. What is important is to use the ressources accordingly.
