FIRST MATE JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Function

|
Responsible for the supervision and training
of Junior Officers and Deck Crew. To ensure the safe handling of all
equipment and toys on deck by guests or crew. To relieve Captain in all
areas onboard should he become incapable through injury or illness. To
make sure all safety requirements are met or exceeded onboard, and adhered to by
guests and crew. To understand and implement all navigational laws.

Responsibilities
- Planning and implementation of safety procedures
for both crew and guests in regards to fire, flood, man-overboard, heavy weather,
under way procedures etc.
- Implementing safety equipment maintenance and crew
instruction in the usage of safety equipment.
- Ensuring crew meet the requirements for their position,
and maintain their training levels as per SOLAS, STCW, ABS etc.
- Ensure the exterior crew, under his command, are
fully versed in the use of all maintenance equipment, products and schedules
for the upkeep of the vessel. (two part paint, awl grip, varnishing, maintenance
of tenders and toys etc)
- The safe handling of the vessel by the crew during
docking, undocking, anchor etc procedures by using fenders, lines, boat hooks
etc.
- The upkeep and updating of navigational charts
and software.
- Competence in vessel maneuvering, proficiency in
radar, VHF, SSB, GPS, Compass usage, Chart plotting and other navigational
aids.
- Creating watch lists, rotations and drills for
the crew in different scenarios so each member is familiar with the different
roles in each scenario and location.
- Inventory and provisioning of supplies used by
the deck department.
- Understanding and implementing all environmental
pollution regulations as they pertain to the vessel in its locations throughout
the world.
- Understanding and implement the yacht registration
requirements.
- Understanding and ensuring all Maritime flag, anchor,
navigation lights and tender protocols are adhered to by either him/herself
or a junior officer.
- Ensuring work areas throughout the vessel are presentable
at all times, regardless of activity.
- Maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
- General understanding and knowledge of customs
requirements for both ship and crew in matters of immigration and legal liabilities.
Qualifications
- Licensing as required by the vessel tonnage.
- Previous yachting experience on vessels of similar
size or previous experience on vessels of larger size in a junior position.
- Enthusiastic, can do attitude.
- Willingness to work long hours and maintain a professional
demeanor.
- Ability to contribute positively to the overall
performance of the crew onboard.
- Advanced First Aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillator
usage.
- STCW 95.
